Black steel shackles connected by chain; inside ratchets

History

Used by German soliders to shackle prisoners from the Dieppe Raid. This pair was used on donor, a private in the Essex Scottish Regiment. Prisoners were first tied with ropes for approximately 2 months and then shackled in handcuffs for 13 months. Prisoners were able to open them with a sardine can, dog tags etc.
