History

The grapeshot was made up of a series of small iron balls, packed around a spindle and tampion (core) of wood or metal and wrapped in a bag. The bag burned away as the shot was propelled out the barrel, allowing the cluster of shot and the core to cause considerable damage to any people in its path at a range of up to 900 yards.
