Description

portrait of Thomas McKee (son of Alexander McKee)

History

This Painting was originally thought to be of Alexander McKee, Thomas' father. The area of the nose proved to have been an unfortunate earlier attempt at restoration to repair damage caused by folding the painting. The object in the hand is not, as had once been thought, a tomahawk handle converted to a musical instrument. It is in fact a woodwind, and always has been - a chalumeau to be precise (=shawm = a clarinet). The sheet of music at the bottom is not an over painting to hide a tomahawk head, either; it is likewise original. Markings on the jacket buttons can now be made out, which suggest the regimental number LX.
