Black and white photograph of the Sandwich Courthouse, later known as Mackenzie Hall; the photograph is taken from a corner; the stone building is two-storeys with two brick staircases; the windows are arched and a chimney is visible on the roof; trees and utility poles line the dirt street; the courthouse was located across the street from the home of the donor's aunt, Bertha Wells.

History

The stone courthouse was built during the years 1854 and 1855. J.A. Jordan of Detroit was the architect, and the Mackenzie Brothers of Port Sarnia were the contractors. The contract price was 6325 British pounds and the building was completed on September 1, 1855. Alexander Mackenzie, one of the builders, afterwards became Prime Minister of Canada. The building is currently known as Mackenzie Hall.
