History

George Fortune MacDonald was born about 1879 to Colin and Janet Laing (Fortune) MacDonald. He attended several schools in Windsor including the first Ward School, Central School and the Park Street School. In 1898-99, with his mother's brother George Fortune, George visited the Scottish home of his parents. Upon his return to Windsor in 1899 he joined his father's company, Bartlet & MacDonald, of which he later became president. Over the ensuing years he was very active in the Essex County Historical Society and the Ontario Historical Society, and held the presidency in 1932 - 1934. His interest in history led him to collect a large body of archival materials and artifacts from Windsor which he donated to the Windsor Public Library and Windsor's Community Museum. He married Miss Lula Demming of Leamington and was integral in establishing the Francois Baby House as Windsor's Community Museum. Upon his death in 1959, George MacDonald donated money to many local organizations, including Windsor's Community Museum.
