History

James Lambie was born in Strathaven, Scotland circa 1830. In 1837 he came to North America with his parents Francis and Mary Hamilton Lambie and siblings, settling in Ypsilanti Michigan. The family then moved to Sandwich in 1845 and farmed at Petite Cote. In 1855 he built Lambie Hall on Ferry St, in Windsor. The hall was not only the location of a general store run by James but it also served as meeting place for Congregationalists, Methodists, and Salvationists. Gospel meetings were held every Sunday for eight years by James Lambie. Lambie Hall was used as the first public library in 1894. It was torn down in 1914. Circa 1867, James removed the general store to 32 Sandwich St West (North West corner of Sandwich & Ferry). He married first Frances Nobles and following her death he married Harriot Douglas. James died in1897, and following his death the store was operated by A.D. Bowlby, a nephew.
