James Doan was born in Newmarket in 1846 and was raised in Listowel until he was 17. He began his working career as a clerk in W.J. Kennedy's Drug Store in Kingsville around 1863. He began his own business, Doan's Drug Store, in the late 1860s. He continued his business for over 35 years, before selling his store to Lorne Shier in 1905. He was well known in Kingsville for selling a number of prescriptions which he created himself, including tooth powder, hair vigour and Doan's Kidney Pills. Doan was married three times. His first wife was Delorius Wigle, daughter of Daniel Wigle, who died a short time after their marriage. Margaret Wigle, daughter of Adam R. Wigle was his second spouse. His third partner, widow Mrs. Francis D. Clark, survived him. He was the father of two daughters and one son.
