Description: Black and white photograph of the Walkerville Fire Department, Hose No. 1; the engine is a long, four wheeled, horse-drawn fire wagon; there are approximately nine men standing and sitting on the wagon, in uniform, and it is harnessed to two dark horses; there is a lamp at the front of the card and "No.1 Walkerville F.D." is painted on the side; there is a brick building covered in ivy behind the wagon; hand written at the bottom of the photograph is "Hose No. 1 Walkerville, F.D."; photo is printed on back of a postcard
History: The Walkerville Fire Department was established on January 9, 1877. It originally consisted of three companies: No.1 Hose Company, No. 2 Hose Company and Hook & Ladder Company. All the firemen were employees of the Walker Distillery. The Fire Department was privately owned and maintained by the Walkers. In March 1916 the town of Walkerville agreed to contribute $10, 000 per year to the maintenance of the brigade and in October 1922 the annual contribution was raised to $35, 000 per year.
