History

Miles R.B. Cowan was born in Sandwich on March 5, 1833. At age 16, Miles acted as a clerk in a dry-goods store in Detroit and was later engaged in the same capacity in Cleveland. After five years Miles returned to Sandwich and in 1855 was appointed to the Customs at Windsor, where he served faithfully for 41 years. In 1877 Miles married Mrs. P.A. Nickles and the two produced one son, Miles Hall Cowan. The back of the photograph indicates that Miles R.B. Cowan was an Ensign in the No. 2 Sandwich Infantry Company and did frontier duty during the Fenian Raids of 1865 - 1866. It also indicates that he was a member of the building committee when St. John's Church was rebuilt in 1872.
