Description

Black and white studio portrait of Miss Ellen Baxter; Miss Baxter is standing with her head facing the camera, though her body is angled toward the left; she is wearing a long dess, both dark and light, with ruffles, a square neck and three-quarter length sleeves; it has a striped, pointed stomacher, frills down the front and horizontal & vertical velvet bands around the skirt; a long, fully lined, bustled train is attached to the dress; her right hand is resting on a table which is covered by a thick piece of material and several other items stand on top; there is a chair partially visible behind Miss Baxter and to the right, and a small footstool sits in the bottom left corner; the photographer's stamp "L. Eckerson 70, 72 & 74 King St. West, Hamilton Ont." appears both beneath the photograph and, in greater detail, on the reverse; a handwritten note on the back of the photograph states that Miss Baxter wore this dress when she was presented to the Marquis of Lorne;

History

Notes from the donor of the gown and photo (Edith Margaret Bowlby) indicate that the ball gown was worn to a ball given in honour of the Marquis of Lorne when he was the Governor General of Canada, about 1875. Miss Baxter (1836 - 1920) was a cousin of Margaret Bowlby's grandmother.
