Photo of an unidentified man and girl riding in a horse-driven wagon, laden with an unknown cargo; possibly members of the Allen family; the George Allen residence and property can be seen in the background; located at what was 2501 McDougall Ave., the property now falls within the baseball diamond at Jackson Park.

History

George Allen purchased this home in 1911. He and his wife, Hortense, raised 14 children here until the family moved in 1925, relocating to 611 Tecumseh Rd. E. [now 543, at Howard Ave.] George Allen operated the livery stable and was caretaker at Windsor Driving Park [now Jackson Park], and was superintendant of the Windsor Jockey Club which operated the raceway. He also owned his own Livery & Feed Stable at 44 Pitt St. E. He grew wheat at the infield of the Windsor Driving Park during World War I for the war effort, and operated a lumber sealing business with his sons, hauling wood from Yawkey Bush. George Allen died in 1919.
