History

St. Mary's Church was built in 1870 on the south side of present-day Riverside Drive by Hiram Walker. It was dedicated on Sunday, January 8, 1871, was of brick construction, and would seat 250 worshippers. It was originally of Methodist affiliation but adopted Church of England services in 1874. It was named St. Mary's after Mrs. Walker, who died in September 1872. Extensive repairs were completed in 1885. The public school was located in the basement of St. Mary's from 1870 until 1879 or 1880.
