History

The Norton Palmer hotel opened on December 17, 1927. With 250 rooms (more were added later) and 12 storeys, it was to become Windsor's tallest building of the day. The hotel's main market was businessmen who wanted good service at a reasonable cost, however, according to an article in the Border Cities Star, it had accommodations to suit the most fastidious - commodious suites that radiate comfort and quiteness. The hotel, which took a mere nine months to build, was named after Charles W. Norton, a veteran Detroit hotel proprietor, and Perry C. Palmer, its treasurer and resident manager. The Norton Palmer closed in 1974 and the Ontario Housing Corporation bought it for about $275,000. It was then sold in 1979 to Danzig Enterprises Ltd. for $690,000. The hotel was demolished and the site is now occupied by the Victoria Park Place Apartments. Border Cities Wire & Iron Ltd. operated in Walkerville from 1922 through until the early 1980's creating structural steel and ornamental iron among other things.
