Title (Fre)

Déchargement des betteraves à Tilbury

Description

Black and white photograph of beets being unloaded near Tilbury; a large pile of beets is visible in the centre of the photograph; there is a cart on the left side of the beets; two men are shovelling beets from the cart onto the pile; a truck is parked, facing the camera, on the right of the pile and a man is standing beside the truck; a building, possibly a barn, is visible to the right of the truck; the shadow of the person taking the photograph is visible in the foreground.

History

In 1944, two of Canada's five beet sugar factories were operated by the Canadian and Dominion Sugar Company Ltd. at Chatham and Wallaceburg in Kent County. Favourable natural conditions (limey soils and dry autumns) combined with the distance of this part of southwestern Ontario from the nearest Canadian cane refineries at Montreal favoured the industry. The bulk of the best crop was shipped to the factories by truck or wagon, with the remainder being sent by rail.
