Title (Fre)

Déchargement des betteraves à Elmstead

Description

Black and white photograph of beets being unloaded into a pit in Elmstead, Ontario; a large pile of beets runs diagonally from the centre of the left side of the photo, up through the centre; three carts, each harnessed to two horses, are stopped in front of the pile of beets and are being unloaded by agricultural labourers; there are trees in the background and grass in the foreground; the beets are being unloaded in Elmstead, to be moved by freight car to Chatham at a later date.

History

In 1944, two of Canada's five beet sugar factories were operated by the Canadian and Dominion Sugar Company Ltd. at Chatham and Wallaceburg in Kent County. Favourable natural conditions (limey soils and dry autumns) combined with the distance of this part of southwestern Ontario from the nearest Canadian cane refineries at Montreal favoured the industry. The bulk of the best crop was shipped to the factories by truck or wagon, with the remainder being sent by rail.
