History

The Essex Fusiliers were formed in 1885 as the 21st Essex Battalion of Infantry. In 1887 they became the 21st Battalion, Essex Fusiliers, and in 1900 became known as the 21st Regiment, Essex Fusiliers. The unit was disbanded in 1920 and reorganized as different battalions of the Essex Fusiliers and their name changed again in 1927 to the Essex Scottish Regiment. Since 1954 they have been known as the Essex & Kent Scottish Regiment. Frederick K. Laing was born in Toronto in 1856 and moved to Windsor in 1870. He enlisted as a Private in the 21st Regiment in 1873, becoming an Ensign of No.1 Co. in 1882 and promoted to Captain of his Company in 1898. In 1901 he was gazetted as a Junior Major of the Regiment, and received his appointment as Lietenant Colonel of the 21st Regiment in 1908. He was a successful businessman as well, operating a drug store in the Norwich Block on Sandwich St. W., while also acting as an insurance agent for Canada Life Assurance Co. He later built the Laing Building at the corner of Ouellette Ave and Pitt St. W. in the Norwich Block, where he opened Laing's Drug Store. He also established his own real estate and insurance business F.H. Laing & Son Ltd. His son, Alfred B. Laing, participated in both businesses.
