Dr. John Wesley Brien et Famille

Date

ca 1900 - 1909

Description

Photo of a fine brick home, on Talbot St., Essex, with a cobble foundation, veranda porch with balcony, and stained glass inserts in windows; the home and grounds are immaculate; the Brien Family reposes on the front porch of their home, with a small child sitting on the front steps, and Dr. J.W. Brien above her.

History

Dr. J.W. Brien was a well-respected physician and Conservative. He shared a practice, also on Talbot St., with Dr. C.W. Procunier. Dr. J.W. Brien was a past master of the No. 402 Central Lodge of the Masonic Order, a Royal Arch Mason, and the past grand master of the No. 218 Enterprise Lodge of the I.O.O.F. [located across the street, next to the Essex Free Press building]. His wife, Annie [nee Rutherford], lived in this residence until 1959, after which it was purchased by the Imperial Bank and demolished to make way for a new branch. Approximately 150 glass plate negatives, including the one for this photo, were found in the wreckage of this home by Rodger Saegert, after it was demolished in May 1959.
