History

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is the only international subaqueous vehicular tunnel in the world. Construction began in the summer of 1928 on both sides of the river. Work was divided into five sections. It was completed in just 10 months using three different tunnelling methods at a total cost of $23 million, $1 million of which was used to purchase the former St. Mary's Academy site. Opening ceremonies took place the morning of November 1st and the tunnel was officially opened to public traffic at 12:05am on Monday, November 3, 1930.
