Description

Photo of the Jesuit pear tree planted behind the Francois Baby House at 254 Pitt St. W.

History

This tree was planted from a cutting of the pear tree which blew down in 1965. The pear tree was the crowning glory of the simple agricultural economy of the French pioneers. Their so-called Mission Pear Trees, planted by the Jesuit missionaries about three centuries ago along the shores of Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and Lake Erie, indicate the ground traversed by these early missionaries. Various writers mention large pear trees in the vicinity of Sandwich, such as the tree in the photograph. Other fruits raised by the French were plums, cherries, apples and grapes and orchards adjoined almost every house.
