History: The checkerboard pattern of farms and fields are characteristic of the southwestern Ontario peninsula generally. The characteristic farmery and outbuilding on farms, which are mostly operated by the owners, are widely in evidence in this photograph. In general, agricultural gradients in most of the county are weak, but especially in South Essex where there are some sharp contrasts within small areas between specialized areas and adjacent areas of general farming. The flatness of the Essex peninsula, its moderate rainfall, and conservational methods of farming have greatly reduced the erosional problem, particularly on the light soil areas.
