History

Several large gravel pits were in operation near Leamington in the 1940s, in the highest part of Essex County. From these pits, gravel laid down by ancient glacial melt waters, was taken to meet the needs of modern construction and road building. Two interesting historic projects that were supplied with gravel from this section were the Pere Marquette Railway road bed and the New York Central (Michigan Central) tunnel.
