Description

Black and white photograph of the ruins of Christ Church in Colchester; the church is in the centre of the photo; the four walls of the church are visible, however, there is no roof; the side wall is densely covered in foliage and there are trees surrounding the building; there is a small monument, possibly a gravestone, is visible at the left of the photograph.

History

In 1816 Reverend Richard Pollard met with the wardens of Colchester regarding the building of a church and school at Colchester. The building of the church was contracted to Mr. William McCormick and was completed in 1820 with limestone from Pelee Island. The church was officially opened in 1821. In 1824, Reverend Pollard died and Colchester was served from Amherstburg. This church was used until 1876 when a new church was built. Pollard also established the Anglican Church in Sandwich, Amherstburg and Chatham and conducted services in these places for over 20 years. While Essex County is mostly low lake plain, there is noticeably higher land where the Detroit interlobate moraine crosses the county from Windsor to Seacliffe Park, Leamington. Another high area is the Colchester district, where at a point on the bluff over sixty feet above Lake Erie, on a clear day one may see Perry's Monument at Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island, about twenty-five miles away. In this area erosion has been particularly active, the result of Lake Erie working against the southward projecting shore. The rapidity of erosion in this district is attested by the fact that the old Anglican Church at Colchester is 150 feet nearer the lake than when it was constructed in 1821.
