Morainic Landscape Near Kingsville / Paysage morainique près de Kingsville

Title (Fre)

Paysage morainique près de Kingsville

Date

ca 1941

Description

Black and white photograph of a morainic landscape in Gosfield South Township, on Highway 18 near Kingsville; in the foreground there is a large field littered with large boulders; the boulders are morainic, meaning that they were deposited by glaciers; there is a man standing looking at the stones on the left; there are abandoned buildings in the background; striking landscape contrasts are evident within a relatively short distance on King's Highway 18 between Kingsville and Leamington.

History

Morainic areas are often poor while other intensive, highly specialized agricultural lands are more profitable. Morainic boulders were sometimes put to practical use. Some people used the boulders to build houses and, in pioneer times, the stones were useful to pioneers in constructing hearths.
