Description

Black and white photograph of a house owned by the Wigle family in Gosfield South Township, near Kingsville; the house is made of morainic (ie. glacier-deposited stones) boulders; it is two storeys high with a screened in porch beneath a balcony that begins in the centre of the front of the house and curves to the right around the side; there is a wide expanse of lawn visible in the foreground and some trees visible on the right; striking landscape contrasts are evident within a relatively short distance on King's Highway 18 between Kingsville and Leamington;

History

Morainic areas are often poor while other intensive, highly specialized agricultural lands are more profitable. Morainic boulders were sometimes put to practical use. This fine old house, belonging to a member of the Wigle family, shows what practical use may be made out of them. In pioneer times, the stones were useful to pioneers in constructing hearths.
