Black and white photograph of an electric locomotive making the first test run of the new railroad tunnel between Detroit and Windsor; a high cement wall runs along the left side of the photograph; the electric rail car is on railroad tracks in the foreground of the photo; there are a great number of men and women sitting and standing in and on top of the car; four men are visible looking back at the camera from windows in the car; the tunnel entrance is visible behind the car and "Detroit River Tunnel 1909" is carved into the stone; between the two tunnel entrances is a wide cement block; three men are standing on the block and there are construction materials on the ground in front of it.

History

The Michigan Central Railroad began construction in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Company of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
