Black and white photograph of the original H.J. Heinz Company building in Leamington, Ontario; the building is a tall, five-storey brick building; the front face has a number of rectangular windows on the first three storeys; on the fourth and fifth storeys there are only two windows on each and a large sign "Heinz 57 Varieties" is painted onto the wall; there is a metal staircase running from the top window on the left side to the ground; the right side of the building also has multiple rectangular windows and Heinz advertising painted on its face; a railway track runs from the bottom left corner of the photo, diagonally to the right and curving to the left in front of the building; there is a Canadian Pacific railway car stopped in front of the building; other parts of the Heinz factory are visible to the left of the main building.

History

In 1908 the H.J. Heinz Company located their Canadian factory in Leamington. As an inducement to come to Leamington, the town council gave the company an old building, formerly used by the Ward Tobacco Company. A few years later the building was torn down and in its place Heinz erected larger and more up-to-date buildings. The plant utilizes tomatoes, beans and other vegetables for pickles, soups and canned vegetables, and is the home of the famous "57 Varieties". The combination of warm climate and good clay loam soil in the Leamington-Chatham area makes it the principal tomato-growing section of Ontario. The company is still operating in Leamington today.
