History

The fine home of Lewis Wigle became the first Leamington High School. Lewis Wigle (1845 - 1934) was a leading citizen and politician in South Essex for many years. The first high school in Leamington opened its doors to students in January 1896. In 1908 it was found that the dwelling purchased from Lewis Wigle was no longer adequate for the needs of the community and four new rooms were added to the rear of the building. At the same time, a hot-water heating system was installed. This accommodation sufficed until 1920 when increased attendance demanded a larger building. The present building was erected in 1922 and opened its doors for the first time in April, 1923.
