History: Previous to 1885, the only public high school in Essex County was at Windsor. In the fall of that year high school classes were started in an Essex Centre church. Three years later the building shown was opened and served until its destruction by fire in 1921. The first unit of the present school was opened in September, 1922. The enlarged Essex District High School was officially opened in 1950.
