History

Built in the Norman style, St. Alphonsus is a brick structure with cut stone and white wood trim. The extension, central tower is topped by a wooden belvedere with a pinnacle at each corner. Wooden tracery decorates the Norman windows and a rosette window in the tower. The interior ceiling is painted with copies of old masters and black walnut is used in the carved panelling found in the altar area. Bishop Armandus de Charbonnel, Bishop of Toronto, declared that due to the population influx which would eventually follow the establishment of a railway terminus, a church should be built to meet the needs of the Roman Catholic residents of Windsor. In 1873 St. Alphonsus was the first church to be consecrated in the Diocese of London.
