Description

Black and white photograph of Pitt Street West, looking east from Dougall Avenue; the wooden sidewalk is running from the bottom centre of the photograph up through the middle; to the right of the sidewalk there is grass, trees and part of Pitt Street visible; on the left there is a woman, only half in the photo, holding her hands on her hips; she is leaning on a fence that runs along the sidewalk; halfway up the photograph there is a sign for The Monroe Gold Cure (which was in the Francois Baby House); there are houses and more trees visible further down the street.

History

Between 1894-1903, the Francois Baby House became the residence and office of Dr. Peter Augustus Aikman, dispenser of the Monroe Improved Gold Cure. Aikman, a part-time inventor (the Aikman Automatic Car Coupler) and developer of a patent medicine called "Orangeine" had generated a large medical practice since his arrival in Windsor in 1870. The Gold Cure's tenure in the Baby House lasted through 1903.
