Title (Fre)

Transport des betteraves sucrières

Date

ca 1940

Description

Black and white photograph of a truck carrying sugar beets from the Comber weigh station to a Chatham factory; the truck is piled high with beets and is stopped beside a beet field; there are barns and other buildings visible in the background.

History

In 1944, two of Canada's five beet sugar factories were operated by the Canadian and Dominion Sugar Company Ltd. at Chatham and Wallaceburg in Kent County. Favourable natural conditions (limey soils and dry autumns) combined with the distance of this part of southwestern Ontario from the nearest Canadian cane refineries at Montreal favoured the industry. The bulk of the best crop was shipped to the factories by truck or wagon, with the remainder being sent by rail.
