Description

Grainy black and white photograph of the Windsor Market; there is a pillar in the centre of the photograph with a "No Parking Day or Night" sign painted on; there are a large number of people in the photograph, browsing the market booths.

History

Though the site was used as a market for many years previous, the Windsor Market building opened in August, 1929. The new, $190,000 structure was impressive and had ample space for booths, a design allowing cars and trucks access to the second floor and a supply of electricity allowing the use of refrigerated display cases. The building was also home to a Community Welfare Exchange, various volunteer organizations active during WWII, union meetings, pet parades and wrestling matches. The Windsor Market Building closed in 1997 and was subsequently demolished. The market relocated to the former Wyeth Pharmaceutical Building on Ottawa Street. The old market site is presently an empty lot.
