Description

Black and white photograph of the Sandwich School House; the building is one storey high with rectangular shuttered windows (two open and one closed on the right side) and a tall bell tower in the centre; the front of the building has two sets of double doors, one of which has a ramp, and a doorway on the right; there is a second, slightly taller, building attached to the back end of the schoolhouse; there are two children walking into the photo on the right side.

History

This building, formerly located at 351 Mill Street, was used in many and varied capacities. Built in 1838 as the first Methodist Chapel, it was sold in 1879 to the Town of Sandwich for use as a Council Chamber. It was later used as a fire hall. Although little reference has been made to it being used as a schoolhouse, it is quite likely that it temporarily housed school children during the construction of permanent schools.
