History

This white clapboard house with black shutters retains much of its original building style and has been the site of some important activities. It was used as an officers' quarters during the rebellion of 1837-8 and shackles were still attached to the basement walls when subsequent owners moved in. Architecturally, the McGregor-Cowan house reflects the symmetry of a Greek Revival style. Like many of the buildings of Sandwich, this house too is a hybrid and has some of the characteristics of the American Classical style. The building is believed to be the second oldest existing house in Sandwich, after the Duff-Baby House. Built circa 1806-1809, it was originally owned by John McGregor and may have served as a storehouse of the North West Company. in 1831-1832 it was purchased by John Cowan, publisher of the Canadian Emigrant and Western District Advertiser. Local historians place the publishing of this newspaper in the house.
