Description: Black and white photograph of the partially completed entrance/exit to the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; the entrance tubes have been set down into a trench and "Detroit River Tunnel 1909" has been carved into the front; there are wooden planks and other building supplies strewn about in the trench and additional supplies are visible above the trench; on the left side there is a crane hauling a load down into the trench; there are two men visible atop the trench and one man in the trench
History: Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Company of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
