Black and white photograph of the partially completed entrance/exit to the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; the entrance tubes have been set down into a trench and "Detroit River Tunnel 1909" has been carved into the front; there are wooden planks and other building supplies strewn about in the trench and additional supplies are visible above the trench; on the left side there is a crane hauling a load down into the trench; there are two men visible atop the trench and one man in the trench

History

Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Company of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
