Description: Black and white photograph of a partially submerged hull of a section of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; the tunnel hull is submerged almost to the top of the tubes; above the water, on top of the hull, there are four cylinders and some scaffolding and cranes; beside the hull there is a barge with "Butler Bros. Construction Co." painted on a sign on the side; there is a small boat to the left of the photograph; on shore there are a number of spectators on shore watching the hull being submerged; there are both men, women and children and in the centre of the photograph there is a man sitting on a cart that is harnessed to a horse; Detroit is visible across the river.
History: Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Company of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
