Black and white photograph of a partially submerged hull of a section of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; the tunnel hull is submerged almost to the top of the tubes; above the water, on top of the hull, there are four cylinders and some scaffolding and cranes; beside the hull there is a barge with "Butler Bros. Construction Co." painted on a sign on the side; there is a small boat to the left of the photograph; on shore there are a number of spectators on shore watching the hull being submerged; there are both men, women and children and in the centre of the photograph there is a man sitting on a cart that is harnessed to a horse; Detroit is visible across the river.

History

Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Company of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
