Description

Black and white photograph of the building of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; the photograph shows the two tunnel tubes partially completed and partially buried into a deep trench; a crane stands on top of wooden planks at the end of the tunnel; there are a number of men standing on top of building equipment in the trench in front of the completed section of the tunnel; on the right side, at the top of the trench, there is another crane; planks and building materials are present throughout the building site; the top portion of the photograph has been coloured with blue and pink.

History

Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Company of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
