Black and white photograph of the interior of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; it shows the end of section 1, two large cylinders with planks boarding the openings; there are ladders leading from the ground level 2/3 of the way up the planked opening; there are two men standing near the ground in the bottom left part of the photograph; "2504 Looking north across end of Sect. 1, Dec. 9th, 1908" is very faintly visible, typed on a band beneath the photograph.

History

Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Co. of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
