Description: Black and white photograph of the interior of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; it shows the end of section 1, two large cylinders with planks boarding the openings; there are ladders leading from the ground level 2/3 of the way up the planked opening; there are two men standing near the ground in the bottom left part of the photograph; "2504 Looking north across end of Sect. 1, Dec. 9th, 1908" is very faintly visible, typed on a band beneath the photograph.
History: Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Co. of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
