Description

Black and white photograph of the intersection of Sandwich and Brock Streets in Sandwich, the major intersection of the Town of Sandwich at the time; in the foreground on the left of the photograph is an empty cart; a large, two-storey brick building is on the left side of the photograph; it is a store and may possibly be the office of the J.H. Bishop Fur Company; there are a number of men and one child standing in front of the store among some goods for sale; on the right side of the street there is a long fence; behind the fence is a large tree, then St. John's Anglican Church, then the Treasury Office and Jail buildings

History

The present St. John's Church, located at 3305 Sandwich Street, is the third structure on this lot. The first Anglican minister of Sandwich, Mr. Richard Pollard, held meetings in the courthouse until the first church was built in 1806. The church was burnt to the ground during the War of 1812. In 1819 a new church of brick was built, added onto in 1843 and a tower constructed in 1852. In 1871 the rear portion of the building was torn down and rebuilt. This explains how the main part of the church came to be built in the Gothic style, while the tower is Norman. This combination of old and new church was officially opened in 1873.
