History

The Sandwich Canal, also known as the Mineral Springs Canal, was located between Chappell and John Streets. Consisting of a lagoon which ran from the river's edge to a mineral springs bath and spa, the canal was considered a popular tourist attraction and weekend retreat in the 1870s and 1880s.
