Description

Black and white photograph of the Sandwich Public School; the building is a two-storey brick structure with a protruding section in the front centre and a tower above; it has a peaked roof with chimneys at either end; there are eight rectangular windows on the front of the building and one tall arched window in the centre section; the doorway is a white set of double doors and "PUBLIC SCHOOL 1868" is on a sign between the window and door; there are two small sheds with doors, one on either side of the building, and houses are visible to both sides; there are bare trees in the yard and a path that leads from the centre of the photo to the school and around the building; there is a blurred figure (possibly a small boy) standing in front of the doorway.

History

This building was built in 1868 following the demolition of the old Stone Barracks. It was situated on lot nine in Sandwich and the site is presently occupied by General Brock Public School which was built in 1915.
