History

It was the home of John W. Wilkinson and his son, John Richardson Wilkinson, was born there. John W. Wilkinson was born in Ohio and came to Mersea township in early boyhood. He bought a farm on Talbot Street in Mersea Township where he farmed for most of his life. He was married in Mersea to Jane Richardson in 1834 and they had six children: Mary Ann, John Richardson, Henry K., Matthew Hall, Arthur and Maria. He served as sergeant in the militia and was in active service during the Rebellion of 1837 - 38. John Richardson Wilkinson remained upon the homestead farm until he was eighteen and then learned the carpentry and cabinetmaking business. In 1862 he was appointed colour-sergeant in the Leamington Independent Infantry Company and served with the army in various capacities until his retirement in 1892 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Colonel Wilkinson was married at Detroit on August 7, 1859 to Mary Jane Stockwell. They had five children: Florence (1860), Henry Hall (1863), Orval Arthur (1865), Laura Adell (1867) and Clarabell (1870).
