Description

Black and white photograph of the H.O. Fleming Homestead; the photo is faded, yellowed, ripped and tarnished and is thus very difficult to make out; the house appears to be two storeys high with at least one chimney; there appears to be a covered porch, partially obscured by trees, in the front; there is a path running from the bottom left corner of the photo through the centre up to the house; handwritten below: "The H.O. Fleming Homestead, Bedford Street - Sandwich. (Original Building Erected in 1780) Formerly the Wilkinson-Hands homestead (1906)".

History

The building pictured was built in 1780 and the land was originally part of the Indian Reserve. It was the home of the first Sandwich post office and was situated at the northern part of the town. William Hands, local Sheriff, District Treasurer, Customs Officer, Judge of Surrogate, and Registrar of Surrogate was Sandwich's first Postmaster and his home served as the first Post Office. He held the position from 1800 - 1834 and died on February 20, 1836. After the death of Mr. Hands the property passed into possession of Mrs. James H. Wilkinson and then to Harwood O. Fleming, druggist of Windsor. The building was destroyed by fire on January 1, 1900 and was rebuilt by Mr. Fleming the same year. Bedford Street is now known as Sandwich Street.
