Title (Fre)

Quatre hommes en train de préparer un filet de pêche

Date

ca 1940 - 1955

Description

Four unidentified men prepare nets for fishing within a small fishing shack; the men sit on crates and an iron wood stove sits in the corner of the room

History

Fishing in the 1940s was one of Essex County's minor industries. Long before the season begins the nets must be repaired, leaded and tarred, boats are overhauled and machinery made ready. Large-scale fishing operations were practiced in Lake Erie waters. Pickerel, whitefish and perch were the principal varieties taken and Detroit and the eastern United States were the chief markets. The fisheries of Lake St. Clair and of the Detroit and Thames Rivers were of lesser importance.
