History

This building was built by Mersea Township in 1830, behind the Old Wigle Tavern (or Uncle Lennie's Tavern) and all council meetings for Mersea were held here. Early proprietors of the tavern were Leonard and Jane Wigle and it was (in 1958) a tourist home located at 135 Talbot Street East in Leamington. Leonard Wigle died in 1878 and his funeral procession was 2 miles long, one of the largest funerals ever known in Essex South in the nineteenth century.
