Faded black and white photograph of Strabane, the old Askin Homestead; the house is a two storey building with a peaked roof and two chimneys; the front of the house has four rectangular windows with shutters and an open wooden door; above the door is a dormer with two rectangular windows; on the left side of the house there are two rectangular windows on the top floor and one window and one door on the main floor; on the right side of the house there is a second, one-storey structure attached to the house; much of it is obscured by shrubs but there is a chimney on the roof; there is a boardwalk or path running along the side of the house to the sidewalk; where the path and sidewalk meet there are three brick columns and a small fence; the front yard appears to be overgrown with shrubs

History

John Askin moved to Windsor in 1796 when his loyalty to Great Britain resulted in the loss of his property in Detroit. In 1843 the original building was removed and the home pictured was erected. Askin's grandson, Alexander H. Askin, resided in the house in 1909. Alexander was a civil engineer who was one of the surveyors for the route of the Great Western Railroad and was born in Sandwich in 1831. The property lies on Riverside Dr. E., now at the foot of Strabane Ave.
