Black and white photograph of the J. & T. Hurley Coal Dealers Shop, located at 56 Sandwich Street West in Windsor; the building is a square, two-storey structure with a chimney on the right side of the roof; there are four rectangular windows on the second storey on the front of the house and one on the side; on the main floor there are doors at each end and two rectangular windows in the middle of the house, and on rectangular window on the side of the house; above the doorway on the right there is a small sign; there is a large billboard beside the house: "Home of La Azora The Cigar of Cigars Otto R. Brener ____(blocked by Coal shop) Windsor ___(blocked)".

History

The J. & T. Hurley Co. was established in Detroit in 1870 and in Windsor in 1889 by Mr. John Hurley and Mr. Timothy Hurley. John died about 1892 leaving Timothy the sole owner. The firm dealt in hard and soft coal, charcoal and ice. At great risk, the Hurley Company continued to supply coal to Windsorites during a coal strike in 1902 by running a cargo from Buffalo to Detroit and Windsor.
