Description

Black and white photograph of the Windsor City Market on McDougall Street in Windsor; there is a building on the right side of the photograph that has an open main floor, supporting the upper level with pillars; vendors are lined up both inside and outside the building and the throughway is crowded with shoppers; the left side of the photograph shows the space behind stalls and there are numerous baskets and crates stacked up.

History

The old Windsor Market building was opened in 1929 to great acclaim with a design which allowed car and truck access to the second floor and a supply of electricity so that refrigerated display cases could be used. This site was used as a market site for many years prior to this building as well. The 1929 market building closed in 1997 and was subsequently demolished. The market relocated to the former Wyeth Pharmaceutical Building on Ottawa Street. The old market site is presently an empty lot.
