Faded black and white photograph of a large group of women and children in a hops field at Hiram Walker Farms in Sandwich East Township; there are a number of cut hops on the ground in front of the group and uncut crops behind them; the blurred figure of a person is partially visible climbing one of the poles behind the group.

History

Hops were an important part of the brewing process and were grown in abundance in Essex County before 1900. Hiram Walker employed about 600 people for four weeks at the end of each summer and yielded about 1000 pounds of hops per acre on his extensive farm near Walkerville.
