Description

Black and white photograph of the ferry "Gem" docked in the Detroit River; the Ferry has an upper and lower deck and "GEM" is painted onto the side; there are some blurred figures on the dock and some boats are very faded but partially visible on the river; there is an unidentified building on the left side of the photograph that has a sign reading: "___ For Sale"; hand printed on the bottom of the photograph is: "THE DETROIT & WINDSOR FERRY CO. 1858 STR: GEM CAP'T. TOM CHILVERS Wm CAMPBELL OWNER" and "1858 is printed below the photograph; the ferry is lying at the foot of Huron Street (now Brock Street).

History

It was the first ferry to run between Sandwich, Ontario and Springwells, Michigan. James R. Inness was master of the ship. The "Gem" ferry helped transport fugitive slaves from Detroit to Windsor.
